Tips to Write CPA Canada Cases Faster (Without Losing Quality)

Writing CPA Canada cases quickly — while still earning RC/C — is one of the most important skills you need for Core modules, Electives, and the CFE. Most students don’t struggle because they lack technical knowledge. They struggle because they write inefficiently.

Here are five practical, proven tips to help you write CPA cases faster without sacrificing structure or depth.

1. Build a Strong Outline Before You Start Writing

Your outline is your time‑saver.

A good outline should include:

  • All AOs

  • Quant vs. qual requirements

  • Big‑picture issues

  • Your time budget

Once your outline is ready, writing becomes faster and more focused because you’re no longer thinking about what to write — only how to write it.

Time saved: 20–30 minutes per case.

2. Use a Consistent Structure for Every AO

A predictable structure reduces mental load and speeds up writing.

Use this pattern:

  1. Identify the issue

  2. State the criteria (if applicable)

  3. Apply case facts

  4. Provide depth (pros/cons, risks, impact)

  5. Conclude clearly

When your brain knows the pattern, you write faster — and your answers become more consistent.

3. Stop Re‑Reading the Case

Re‑reading is the biggest timing killer.

Instead:

  • Read the case once

  • Build your outline as you read

  • Refer only to the appendix you’re working on

Your outline replaces the need to re‑read.
This alone can save you 10–15 minutes.

4. Follow a Strict Time Budget

You must decide before writing how much time each AO gets.

Example:

  • FR/MA: 20 minutes

  • Tax: 15 minutes

  • Assurance: 15 minutes

  • Strategy/Governance: 10 minutes

  • Role: 60–90 minutes (Day 2 only)

When time is up, move on, even if you’re not finished.

A partially complete AO is better than a missing one.

5. Don’t Chase Perfection — Aim for Competence

Trying to write a perfect answer slows you down.

Remember:

  • RC and C both count toward sufficiency

  • CD gives no extra benefit

  • Depth matters more than flawless writing

Your goal is competent, not perfect.

Once you accept this, your writing speed increases dramatically.

Bonus Tip: Practice Under Real Exam Conditions

To truly get faster:

  • Write cases in one sitting

  • Don’t pause

  • Don’t check notes

  • Don’t edit while writing

Speed comes from repetition + discipline.
